Project Connections to CCSS
Although the CCSS are not offered for science, there are many cross curricular characteristics that can be adopted to benefit a science lesson/curriculum. The standards listed on the previous page are meant to
- Focus on content depth (the comprehension of 2 dimensional projectile motion requires a large depth of knowledge)
- Integrate the concepts and skills from reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language into instructional units. Avoid teaching skills in isolation. (In this project students will need to conduct research, collaborate with classmates, and create/write a catapult/report. No skill is used in complete isolation.)
- Develop the students’ ability to view themselves as effective readers and writers – as effective communicators. (Confidence and Communication are key factors in completing this challenge project. Although creating a catapult is a major portion of the learning experience, how effectively students communicate through writing and presentation will determine how well the project has been)
- Use resources that connect the English Language Arts concepts and skills in the classroom to the outside world, which adds relevance to what is being taught. (Catapults are everywhere. Well maybe not catapults, but 2 dimensional projectiles are everywhere (ex. basketball, mortar rounds, bullets, golf, etc...)
- Promote performance-based assessment. (Students' project grade will vary based on the functionality and creativeness of their project)
